Revealed: The Internet’s Biggest Security Hole

clipped from blog.wired.com

Two security researchers have demonstrated a new technique to stealthily intercept internet traffic on a scale previously presumed to be unavailable to anyone outside of intelligence agencies like the National Security Agency.

The tactic exploits the internet routing protocol BGP (Border Gateway Protocol) to let an attacker surreptitiously monitor unencrypted internet traffic anywhere in the world, and even modify it before it reaches its destination.

The Lights Will Stay On in Fairbanks

clipped from www.wired.com

2003: Fairbanks is connected to the world’s largest storage battery, built to provide Alaska’s second-biggest city with an uninterrupted power supply.

Fairbanks’ remote location and sub-Arctic climate makes supplying reliable power to the city of 32,000 difficult. In deep winter, the temperature in Fairbanks is almost constantly subzero, dropping as low as minus 60 degrees Fahrenheit The situation is complicated by the fact that Alaska isn’t connected to the power grid that keeps the lower 48 humming.

As a result, Fairbanks used to experience a serious, “cascading” blackout every two or three years, along with a number of smaller failures every month. Since the mountain couldn’t come to Muhammad, it was necessary to devise another source of reliable local power.

DDR1 Vs DDR2

Memory Speed and overheating

There are a number of upgrades that come with the new DDR2 technology over DDR1 memory. DDR2 memory is of course faster, and will ultimately reach clock speeds of 667MHz or higher as opposed to the top functional speed of DDR1 at 400MHz. The higher speeds of DDR 2 memory allow it to have up to 10.6GB per seconds of throughput - quite a bit more than DDR1 memory which maxed at 6.4GB per second. The feature that makes these higher speeds practical is the reduced power consumption of DDR2, which runs at only 1.8 volts. Heat is one of the real banes of IC’s, and the faster you try and clock a chip the hotter it runs and the less reliable it gets. One of the speed limitations of DDR1 was that at 2.5 volts created too much heat and was simply too hot to run consistently at speeds greater than 400MHz. DDR2’s 1.8 volts combined with a much smaller (FBGA) chip package goes a long way towards solving the heat issue at higher speeds.

Cannot Select the “Make This Folder Private” Option in WinXP

You may be unable to select the Make this folder private option on the Sharing tab in the properties for a folder. The option may be unavailable.

CAUSE:-

This issue can occur for either of the following reasons:

  • The folder is not in your user profile (Drive_letter:\Documents and Settings\User_name, where Drive_letter is the drive on which Windows XP is installed and User_name is your user name). The Make this folder private option is available only for files in your user profile (the My Documents folder and its subfolders, and the Cookies, Desktop, Start Menu, or Favorites folders).
  • The Windows folder is located on a drive that is formatted with the FAT or FAT32 file systems. The Make this folder private option requires the NTFS file system.

Not able to open drives on hard disk by double click

This problem is generally caused by most of the viruses which infect windows XP system. They block or restrict your access to any of the drives. But don’t worry this is not a big trouble it can be fixed easily.

Normally, virus creates a small file called ‘autorun.inf’ in the root directory of each drive.

This autorun.inf file is a read only ,hidden and a system file and the folder option is also disabled by the virus. This is deliberately done by the virus in order to protect itself. autorun.inf initiates all the activities that the virus performs when you try to open any drive. You have to just delete this file and restart your system to correct this problem.
